L. Erik Kjonnerod, Director National Defense University’s Wargame Dep 2006 -
Prof. L. Erik Kjonnerod is the Director of the Center for Applied Strategic Learning (CASL) and an Assistant Professor at the National Defense University. He assumed his responsibilities as Director of CASL in 2006 after serving as the Special Assistant to the President of NDU.
Professor Kjonnerod is a specialist in politico-military policy exercises and crisis decision-making simulations. He is a noted Latin American civil-military specialist who has served in military and diplomatic postings throughout the Americas. He came to the National Defense University from the Joint Staff where he was the military planner for Central America and the Caribbean in the Western Hemisphere Division of the Strategic Planning Directorate. A career U. S. Army infantry officer, he served tours in Europe, Latin America and Asia.
Professor Kjonnerod earned his B.A. degree from Rutgers University in 1967 and M.A. from the University of Illinois in 1974. He has published widely on a number of regional and functional topics to include interagency operations, refugee and migration assessments, and U.S. – Latin American security strategy and civil-military relations. He is an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University and lectures at the Foreign Service Institute. He was awarded the Commanders Award for Outstanding Civilian Performance for his efforts in counter-drug initiatives in Latin America, as well as numerous other citations and awards for superior achievement.
