William J. Lademan, Director, USMC Wargaming Division, 2008 - present
In May, 2008, Dr. Lademan assumed his current position as the Director,
Wargaming Division at the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory in Quantico,
Virginia. He helped establish the Marine Corps' Wargaming Center in the
early 1990s. He has been a wargame enthusiast since he first pushed
cardboard playing Avalon Hill's Gettysburg in 1958 and has used wargaming
throughout his career in the illumination of operational and strategic
issues.
Dr. Lademan possesses twenty years of experience in command and
staff positions as a Marine Corps infantry officer. He has conducted
operations, intelligence, logistics, and planning functions from platoon
through division assignments with the Fleet and at the service and national
levels as a joint staff officer.
Upon retirement from the Marine Corps, he finished doctoral studies in
physical chemistry and taught at the college level. Dr. Lademan developed an
expertise in the technology, employment, and effects of Weapons of Mass
Destruction (WMD). He was involved in Homeland Security training programs
designed to prepare municipalities and military bases for WMD incidents.
Joining Booz Allen Hamilton in 2004, he was involved in wargame design and
execution. He also acted as the scientific lead for the Office of Naval Research in examining science and technology solutions to capability gaps identified in Urban, Asymmetric, and Expeditionary Warfare. He was a member of the concept team that produced the Joint Integrating Concept on the Elimination of WMDs.
